There are some older threads on this, but the long and short of it is the Esquire is a parts guitar. Neck from 1957 and the body is likely early 1960's. The body was re-finished according to Phil Petillo, the man who sold it to Springsteen in 1972 and continues to work on it. I've had many long chats with Petillo over the years about the various changes and modifications the guitar has undergone. It had two sets of pickups and two jacks in it when Petillo acquired it from CBS recording studios in a bulk purchase of guitars he intended to fix up and re-sell. Springsteen called up one day, asked what he had for sale, came and played the Esquire...and the rest is history. I think Phil said Bruce paid around $169 for it...so he's certainly gotten his money's worth.
