A Tweed Deluxe (5E3) might work for you. If you haven't had the pleasure, I strongly recommend that you try one out. Big, fat cleans. A huge touch sensitive sweet spot, and a viscious overdriven sound. Quirky channel and control interactions that will have you experimenting for hours. Best of all, it has that wonderful Fender quality of being easy to set up. It always sounds good. I use mine with an EQ pedal in front sometimes. You can't get a Fender for <$1000, but there are plenty of builders out there who will sell you a nice one without breaking the bank.

These are real popular: http://www.littledawgamps.com/

I built a kit from Mission Amps. Good support, top quality components.
