You get compression when the power tubes start to cut off in an AB amp. Which is generally way before clipping depending on how it's biased.

(That's when average current increases, dropping voltage in any power supply with resistance).

FWIW, I have nothing against solid state amps. I've seen Albert King and Lonnie Mack use Rolands and I'll never be able to play like them.
