Back around 1973 or so, my housemate used to make the donuts for a local restaurant. He'd get up about 4:00 AM to go there - brutal. We knew all the cops in town, because they'd all come around the back door early every day for free coffee and donuts provided by my friend. Sounds just like the old cliche, doesn't it? The bonus for us was that we could come home at any time of night from the bars, in any condition, and not have to worry too much. Those free donuts bought us a lot of looking the other way.
