I noticed that the amp is louder and better sounding without the back panel on. The mesh appears to restrict the sound.
Then I noticed that the speaker grill cloth is hard. There's an even more dense (very dense!) steel mesh in the grill.
I bet the amp would really open up with both steel meshes removed.
