I'm another fan of rack mount delays from the '80's. I use an Ibanez DM-2000 Digital Delay or the Harmonics Delay from the same series. The DM-2000 has an loop so you could patch in an EQ to darken the repeats. Probably overkill for your needs, but I like it. Dickey Betts uses a DM-1000.

It lives in my PA rack, but I have an old Yamaha SPX 90 II that does good delays without sounding too sterile. I also have a Roland Space Echo that cost me about as much as a used Dan-Echo. The gear gods were smiling on me that day!
