Semi-hollow would be totally appropriate. If you're drawn that way, I say go with it.

I have an Epiphone Dot, and the neck is REALLY chunky. Feels great to me. Tonally, though, it's much darker than a Tele. I don't know how much setup work you'd need to do -- I intonated mine, and that was it.

Quality-wise, I don't see anything grossly lacking in the Epiphones. Mine has a really minor finish glitch, but overall it's very solid.

The Artcores are also fine instruments. I have a semi-hollow bass and a hollow guitar; they're both excellent.
