vintage 50's teles wood?

I was watching pictures of teles from the 50s era here -> http://telecasterplanet.com/ and I noticed that the lines of the wood are deeper than the surface, like if they had been engraved. Why? is it as a result of the age of is it because the 50's finishes were uneven?

All the 50s teles were one piece body? When Fender started to produce 2 or 3 pieces bodies?
