The problem as I understand it, is that the re-issues are all trying to re-create the original BSB color...and even they differ one to the next. It seems that the reason it's so hard to find the one true BSB color is because of differences in the ways they aged. Lacquer that went on clear in the 1950's would have yellowed over the years, and the degree to which it did so would depend on environmental factors like exposure to UV light and cigarette smoke. I suspect that when these guitars were first top coated with clear lacquer in the 50's, that they were pretty light butterscotch blond looking...much like some of the re-issues today.

Right now I have a Tele body and neck that I just got in from B. Hefner. I'm going through the same frustrating search trying to find a "real" or "true" buterscotch blond color. I think I'm at the point that I'm just going to approximate it according to what I like and think is correct. How far off can I be with so many different shades out there now?
