I absolutely loved the book and when I had heard that the Coen Brothers were making the the film it became a must see. They did a fantastic job of adapting the book. It is a great film. And as far as the violence goes it is far from being Cormac McCarthy's most violent offering. Also, it is one the themes in the book/film. Sherriff Bell was always a step behind, He was overwhelmed by the violence as well. He retired because times had changed and he was now out of his element.
