I completely agree. I learned this a long time ago. I was in a shop trying out vintage guitars, and every single one sounded terrible...beautiful old Gretsch and Gibson guitars all sounded the same. I finally realized it was the amp I didn't like (a new Fender amp...I dont remember the model).
I dont think I've ever played an electric guitar that I couldn't get a good sound out of through an amp I liked.
