I had an Epiphone LP Junior recently and I found the same thing (after I upgraded the awful stock pickup). But I can't use a P90 guitar at our gigs due to the hum and I couldn't find a decent noiseless p90 so I sold it.
My Esquire has a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage tele noiseless pickup in it and it's excellent...but I still can't get the same versatility as the Junior since the tone control just turns the Esquire to mud. That didn't happen on the Junior.
But I might try a different value tone pot (500k or 1meg, not sure yet) and see if that helps.
