I think Fender would be hard pressed to make a product that compares to the older mij Tokais. It would be foolish,incorrect and naive to think that Japanese guitars, mass produced or handcrafted, are inferior to any other brand. The nation has earned it's nickname "the superachievers" because they perfect products invented elsewhere. They have established themselves as the best manufacturers of several complex products (automobiles, electronics, steel, plastic etc). They have accomplished this by the implementation of a corporate/labour work ethic that is the envy of all North American/ European Manufacturers. Their attention to detail is legendary. Their understanding and appreciation of fine objets d'art and old world craftsmanship drove antique and collectible markets skyward due to Japanese investors purchasing anything collectible. What makes anyone think that Japan's guitars would be anything less than the best? I own a Tokai breezysound, among other Custom Shop Teles-The breezysound is just a better sounding guitar. It "nails " the twang perfectly because it is made by people who are the best at replicating and perfecting.
