It really is preferences. All in all there is nothing really wrong with the AS model. It's just different from the vintage build.
I owned one once and sold it. I also sold my AS strat once I played the vintage model I currently have.
Don't forget that lots of us also have mutts and homebrew teles,esquires,51's,etc. and all of these are still just variations on Leo's original.
I would be willing to bet that if Bill K. or Redd each played a '52 RI and an AS most of us would have a hard time picking out which was which blindfolded.
Feel (neck radius and fret size)... that gets back to preferences again.
I will admit that I too had a harder time getting the sound I wanted from my AS vs. a vintage model...then again, I ain't Redd or Bill...
