Fender makes… A phone?

Fender is branching out, and they’re not just phoning this one in. They’ve released the T-Mobile Limited Edition Fender MyTouch cell phone. With a gorgeous wooden case, it does look nice. But a phone? Hello? Fender, is anybody home?

And they’ve got Eric Clapton in their TV spot for the new MyTouch Fender phone. Which is only natural considering that they say it’s not just a phone… but a collectors item. The go on to say: The T-Mobile® myTouch™ 3G Fender™ Limited Edition is connecting people to their passions and great music wherever they go. T-Mobile and Fender introduce a fantastic device for music and more.

Ok, there’s not much more to say about this — and I suppose it’s actually better than the REAL Strats they are turning into video game controlers — so here’s some photos.

When will they release a Relic’d version of this?

I’m going to hold out for the G&L ASAT iphone, then play them together and pick which one I like.

LOL @ strat pick up in the phone pics

This is something you would’ve excepted from Gibson.

  4. Trygve Trygve says:

Bah. They should concentrate on making better instruments….

But then again, Harley Davidson makes a lot of stuff other than motorbikes.
That’s how to make money these days, I guess.

  5. dijos dijos says:

    I wish it had binding.

I’d buy one, but I couldn’t use it? Something about T-mobile’s network not reaching Australia.

    • Oldschoolwax Oldschoolwax says:

If it’s unlocked, it would be fine. T-Mo uses sim cards… They’ll often even unlock phones still under contract if you say you are traveling out of the country and don’t want to go broke making phone calls! Which, for a phone company is fairly nice =)

  7. nedray says:

T-Mobile’s network doesn’t do that well in Virginia USA either. Van you get it with a hotter “pickup”?

    I’ll wait for the vintage re-issue …

I think you guys might be making something bigger out of this than it actually is. Fender is not making a phone. T-Mobile is making a Fenderized version of their myTouch phone.

I heard through the grapevine that the “american deluxe version” comes with a strobe tuner, umbrella, and some special compound that are supposed to shine your shoes, brush your teeth and it has a large database with excuses for your girlfriend or boyfriend.

There will be a budget version “made in korea” under the name squire, however the latest news reports seems to confirm that it has no screen, no electronics whatsoever but it’s usable as a paper press or a sanding block.

    :)

you all have a good one

I had a similar reaction as most of you at first and thought Gibson already try to break into consumer electronics, but Fender seems to be using a more Harley Davidson-like approach. That and I have to admit this phone looks pretty cool, and this website makes it look like it comes with some fun music-related stuff:
    http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Cell-Phone-Detail.aspx?cell-phone=MyTouch-3G-LE-Fender

But Buddy Guy’s music isn’t preloaded along with the others? Well, maybe I’ll get if he’ll call me. Well, Buddy and Catherine Zeta Jones while I’m living in Fender T-Mobile phone fantasy world. I wonder if T-Mobile will work where I live. And what if I call tech support and ask for help swapping out the Noiseless pickups?

  12. qblue says:

I am appalled that they chose T-Mobile as the carrier.

But as long as Buddy gets paid I’m happy about it; Clapton could make any amount of cash just by showing up.

  13. tkdcal says:

They should have scooped out the back so it doesn’t hurt your ass when you put it in your pocket :P

  14. markw51 says:

    Is it finished with Nitro?

  15. twankster says:

IS THERE GONNA BE A SQUIER VERSION ?

  16. twankster says:

SORRY KEN SEE YOU GOT THAT COVERED

  17. DesignTec DesignTec says:

Will it fit in my hardshell Tele case?

  18. rickyraveon says:

Do you get better reception with a Floyd Rose?

  19. iris186 says:

Its a pretty annoying attempt at expanding the brand. Next therell be fender authorized cereal. Please R&D, do something innovative, instead of ya know – not doing very much for the next 10 years.

  20. These comments are great, way funnier than the phone itself. I say it quite a bit, but I love this forum.

  21. Vanguard448 Vanguard448 says:

Hmm, I’m not convinced. Looks like it has a pretty bad factory setup; the buttons are probably quite a low gauge and I doubt that the camera is wound very tightly. I’d probably replace the camera with a DiMarzio and swap out the screen protector for a nice tortoise-shell one.
But, seriously, I think that Fender are free to do whatever they want. However, if this is anything to go by, I don’t think that they really should be. Really, what next? A company that makes guitars also making motorbikes?
    Oh, wait.

    • Bill Hullett Bill Hullett says:

They probably have more time invested in ordering there next shipment of ash than they do getting involved in the Fender Phone….I think it’s cool, My only wish is that they could have had Mary Kaye White or Butterscotch as an alternate finish, those are “Fender Only” colors…

      • Vanguard448 Vanguard448 says:

Fair point, although I think it would be much cooler if the based the design on a Tele bridge and had the pickup as a speaker… hmm, maybe they could release that as a case! (Maybe even a ashtray cover to go with it? :P )

  22. Twangyo Twangyo says:

I want one in the Tele version, with the string ferrules on the back.

  23. kelsonjonnes kelsonjonnes says:

Well, the guitars of them are excellent, we’ll see phones lol but it is beautiful it is!

  24. It would be so much cheaper to buy a 1973 Blonde Tele than to buy one of those and a years worth of service fees. I draw the line at 300$ a month phone bills. Seriously. Your target demographic is GUITARISTS! who are broke by nature! What do you call a guitarist without a girlfriend? homeless!

  25. Lot’s of funnt replies to this..almost wanna make one too.
